A DWR is a durable water repellent finish applied to the outside of a fabric so that water beads and runs off instead of soaking into the surface. It is a treatment on the face of the cloth, not a layer inside it, and that is why it wears off while the waterproofing underneath does not.
What the thing actually does
Left untreated, a woven outer face takes up water and holds a film of it. The fabric becomes heavier, colder and slower to dry, and it looks for all the world as though it is leaking even when nothing has come through.
A DWR changes the surface energy of the outer fibres so that water forms beads and rolls off. The visible test is the one everyone already knows: rain sits up on the fabric in drops rather than spreading into a dark patch.
Why it is not the waterproofing
This is the distinction that matters when reading a listing. Waterproofness is a property of the coating — polyurethane or silicone on a tent fly, a laminate on a bivy bag — and it is published as a hydrostatic head in millimetres of water column. That figure belongs to the coating, and it is quoted separately for a flysheet and for a groundsheet, with the floor normally the higher of the two.
A DWR carries no such number. It sits on the other side of the fabric from the coating, does a different job, and fails in a different way: gradually, invisibly and by wear rather than by puncture.
On a bivy bag the relationship shows up most clearly. The waterproofness figure is rarely the problem, because essentially everything on sale keeps rain out; what governs how damp you are is the breathability figure — a moisture vapour transmission rate in grams per square metre per twenty-four hours, or a RET value — read together with the test the maker names, because the scales are not interchangeable. A wetted-out outer face reduces that exchange whatever the membrane is rated at.
How long it lasts
Makers do not publish a duration for a DWR, and there is no standard that would make one comparable if they did. What can be said is that it is a surface treatment and behaves like one: it goes where the fabric is handled, packed, rubbed and dirtied, so a flysheet loses it at the fold lines and around the peg-out points first.
Dirt is the underrated part. A soiled surface holds water regardless of the treatment beneath it, which is why the first response to a fly that has stopped beading is cleaning rather than reproofing.
How to read this listing
Read the coating, then the numbers that belong to it: hydrostatic head for the fly and for the floor, and denier for each, since the floor is normally the heavier fabric. Read the seam treatment, because taped seams and a rated fabric are two different claims. Then treat any DWR mention as what it is — a surface finish the maker states, with no published figure behind it.
Where a maker names the coating chemistry, note it: silicone-coated fabrics reject conventional adhesive repair tape and need silicone-specific tape or sealant, while polyurethane-coated flysheets take the conventional patches. That is the fabric detail most likely to matter to you later, and it is usually printed once, in small type, on the label sewn into the fly.
