Titanium, aluminium or stainless steel for camp cookware?

Titanium is lightest and heats unevenly, anodised aluminium spreads heat and weighs more, stainless takes abuse. Wall thickness matters as much as the metal.

Titanium is the lightest and the thinnest, hard-anodised aluminium spreads heat far better and weighs more, and stainless steel is the heaviest and takes the most abuse. Which of the three suits you is decided by what you cook rather than by what the pot weighs.

Titanium

The lightest option per unit of stiffness, and the reason ultralight cook kits exist. Titanium walls are thin, they heat fast, and they heat unevenly: the metal directly over the burner runs much hotter than the metal a centimetre away.

For boiling water — which is what most solo camp cooking amounts to — that is exactly right. For anything that sits in the pot and has to be stirred, it is a nuisance, and scorching is the normal result rather than a sign of a bad pot. Titanium also does not hold flavours, which is why it turns up in cutlery as well.

Hard-anodised aluminium

The middle answer, and for most people the sensible one. Aluminium conducts heat far better than titanium, so the base spreads energy across the pot instead of concentrating it, and food that has to simmer will actually simmer.

It weighs more for the same capacity, and the hard-anodised surface is what makes it durable enough to live in a pack. Many sets in this material carry a non-stick coating, and where they do, the maker states what utensils may be used with it — that instruction is part of the specification, not a footnote.

Stainless steel

The heaviest and the toughest. Stainless takes knocks, tolerates a scourer, survives a fire that would ruin a coating, and does not care what it is stirred with. It is the material of choice for car camping and for kit that gets shared and abused, and it is the wrong answer if the pot is going in a rucksack every day.

Single-wall stainless also appears in water bottles, where it takes boiling water and can be used on a stove where the maker says so — a double-wall insulated bottle cannot.

Wall thickness is the specification underneath the material name

Two pots of the same metal can behave differently, and the reason is thickness. A thicker base spreads heat and resists denting; a thinner one saves weight and concentrates the hot spot. Where a maker publishes a wall thickness, read it beside the material rather than instead of it, because it explains most of the difference between two sets that look identical in the photographs.

The other construction feature worth finding is a heat exchanger base — a ring of fins under the pot that shortens the boil time the maker publishes, at the cost of weight, bulk and a surface that has to be kept clear.

What actually decides the purchase

Capacity and packed size, in that order. A solo pot in the region of 800 ml to 1 litre boils enough for one dehydrated meal and a drink; two people need roughly double rather than the same pot twice.

Then read the nested dimensions, and specifically whether a gas canister and a burner fit inside the pot, because that is what decides the volume the kit occupies in the pack. Check the internal diameter against the canister you actually buy: net gas weights of 100, 230 and 450 g come in different diameters and heights, and a pot that will not swallow its own burner costs more pack space than the grams the metal saved.

Finish with the handles — folding or detachable, insulated or not — and the lid, where strainer holes turn a pot into something you can drain.
