Denier describes the yarn a fabric is woven from — not how waterproof it is, and not how strong the finished shelter is. It is the number that predicts weight and abrasion resistance, and it is read alongside the coating figures rather than instead of them.
What the number counts
Denier is a measure of yarn thickness. A low figure means a fine yarn, and a fine yarn woven into a canopy makes a light, thin fabric. A high figure means a coarser yarn and a heavier, tougher cloth. On trekking shelters the practical band runs from around 20D, which is light and thin, up to 70D, which is heavier and takes more abuse.
That is the whole of what the number says. It does not describe the weave, the coating, the ripstop grid or the finish, and two fabrics quoted at the same denier can behave differently for all of those reasons.
Where you meet it on a tent
Makers publish denier separately for the parts that do different jobs. The flysheet is the light one, because it carries only its own weight and the wind. The groundsheet is normally heavier, because it is the face pressed against grit and stones, and that is also where a puncture matters most.
The same logic runs through the rest of the catalogue. Sleeping bags publish a shell denier; sleeping mats publish a denier for the base fabric, which is the face against the ground; camp chair seats are quoted in 600D and 1000D polyester, where the higher figure is the one that resists the grit that eventually cuts a seat; hammocks are commonly 70D nylon ripstop, with 40D and below at the ultralight end.
Denier is not the waterproofing figure
The number that describes waterproofing is hydrostatic head, published in millimetres of water column, and it belongs to the coating rather than to the yarn. A fly and a floor carry separate hydrostatic head figures, and the floor is normally the higher of the two, because a knee on a wet pitch presses harder than rain falls.
The two numbers rise together often enough to be confusing. A heavier fabric can carry a thicker coating, so a 70D floor frequently quotes a higher head than a 20D fly. That is a correlation in how products are built, not a property of denier.
Reading it on a tarp
Tarps make the trade explicit, because the fabric choice is most of the product. Silicone-coated nylon is light and strong for its denier and stretches when wet, so a taut pitch wants retensioning after rain. Silicone-coated polyester barely stretches and is heavier at the same denier. Dyneema composite is a laminate rather than a coated weave, does not stretch or absorb water, and is usually described by its own areal weight rather than by a denier at all.
That last case is worth remembering: where a maker publishes no denier, it is not always an omission. Some fabrics in this category are not described that way.
What to do with the figure
Use denier to predict two things: what the shelter weighs, and how it will cope with being pitched on ground you did not choose. Then read the coating figures for the waterproofing, the pole material and diameter for the structure, and the weight the maker publishes — noting whether it is the trail weight or the packed weight, because those are two different numbers and the gap between them runs to several hundred grams.
A denier quoted on its own is a hint about the cloth. A denier quoted for the fly and the floor, beside a hydrostatic head for each, is a specification.
What people ask before buying
Is a higher denier more waterproof?
Not by itself. Waterproofing comes from the coating and is published separately as a hydrostatic head in millimetres. A higher denier usually goes with a heavier fabric that can carry a thicker coating, which is why the two figures often rise together, but they measure different things.
Why is the floor a higher denier than the flysheet?
Because the two faces meet different hazards. Rain falls on the fly; the floor is pressed against grit, roots and stones by knees and elbows. Makers routinely publish a heavier denier for the groundsheet, and that is a design decision rather than an inconsistency.
