This is a category where the specification sheet is the only thing worth reading, and where the maker's own instructions govern use. Three published figures do the comparing. The micron rating — the pore size the maker states, commonly quoted to two decimal places on hollow-fibre cartridges — describes what the element is built to hold back. The stated flow rate, in litres per minute, is measured on a clean cartridge and falls as the element loads, so treat it as a starting point rather than a promise. The cartridge life, quoted in litres, is the figure that decides running cost, and it varies by more than an order of magnitude across the shelf. Format then changes the daily experience more than the element does: squeeze bottles, in-line units that sit on a hydration hose, gravity bags for a group at camp, and pump filters that work from shallow water. Check whether the housing takes a standard bottle thread, whether the maker supplies a backflush syringe or coupling to restore flow, and what it states about storage and freezing, which is what ends most cartridges early.
