Nothing else in camping kit fails on compatibility as bluntly as a gas canister: the wrong valve simply will not go on the stove. Three systems share the shelf. The EN 417 threaded canister, with its 7/16 inch UNEF screw valve, is what most modern backpacking stoves use and it is resealable. The bayonet canister is a different fitting entirely, common on French and cartridge-style stoves. The pierceable canister has no valve at all and cannot be removed until it is empty. Read the stove's manual and match the wording exactly. After the valve, the number that matters is net gas weight — commonly 100, 230 and 450 g — because the gross weight includes a steel shell you also carry. The gas mix is the cold-weather variable: makers publish the propane, isobutane and butane proportions, and butane-heavy mixes lose pressure as the temperature drops. Finally, take the diameter and height, since they decide whether a canister nests inside your pot and how stable the stove sits. Always follow the canister's own handling instructions.
