Paracord is sold by a type designation, and the one almost everyone means is type III, commonly labelled 550 paracord: roughly 4 mm diameter, a woven sheath over seven inner strands, each of which can be pulled out and used as thinner cord. The figure in the name is a published minimum breaking strength in pounds for a new, straight, undamaged length, and it is a manufacturer specification rather than a working load — knots, edges and age all reduce it, and the cord is not rated or sold for supporting a person. Climbing ropes and harnesses are covered by their own standards, EN 892 and EN 12277 among them, and paracord is not made to any of them. What varies between products is honesty and construction: strand count, whether the core is nylon or a cheaper filler, and whether the maker publishes a strength figure at all.
