The best replacement tent poles for 2026

Replacing a pole is an exercise in matching three numbers, in order. The first is outer diameter, and the common sizes sit in a narrow band — 7.9, 8.5, 9.0, 9.5 and 11 mm are the ones you meet — with no tolerance for guessing, because the ferrule that joins two sections is machined to one of them. Measure the pole across the tube with callipers, not the ferrule. The second is section length, usually somewhere between 40 and 65 cm, which sets both the folded size and how many sections you need. The third is total assembled length, which is what actually has to match the sleeve or clip run on your tent. Material then decides behaviour: 7075 aluminium bends before it breaks and can often be straightened, fibreglass is cheaper and splinters, and carbon is lightest and least forgiving. Check the shock cord — diameter and whether a replacement length is supplied — since a slack cord is the usual reason an old pole will not stand up.
