The packed length is what your boot judges, not the top

Height is the second decision, and on most models it is not adjustable: a dining-height table works with chairs at the same height, a low table works in front of low chairs, and a table bought at the wrong height gets used once. Read the stated load rating, which the maker publishes for a load spread evenly across the top rather than for someone leaning on a corner. Then construction. Aluminum slats over an alloy frame are light and shrug off spilled water; bamboo and laminate tops are steadier and heavier, and laminate over a fibreboard core is the one that swells if it is put away wet. Leg design decides whether the table is usable on real ground: telescopic legs with independent adjustment cope with a slope, fixed legs need a flat pitch, and wide feet stop the whole thing sinking into soft grass by the end of the week.
