The best camp storage boxes for 2026

This is car-camping kit, and it is bought on dimensions rather than on litres. Two sets matter and they are rarely both published: the external footprint, which decides how many fit across a boot, and the internal dimensions, which decide whether a stove, a pot set and a folding basin actually go in. Where a maker publishes only a capacity in litres, treat it as an approximation of a shape you cannot see. The second question is stacking. A recessed lid that locates the box above it turns two boxes into a stable column; a flat lid does not, and a domed one is worse. Where a maker publishes a lid load rating, it tells you whether the lid is a seat or only a cover. Then the closure: over-centre latches hold under load where clip lids pop, and a gasket with a stated rating is the difference between dust-resistant and rain-resistant. Material comes down to polypropylene thickness, which is what cracks in cold weather at the hinge. We compare internal and external dimensions, capacity in litres, whether the lids stack, latch and seal type, material, and stated lid load rating.

The ones worth packing

  1. Sunware anthracite folding crate with integrated handles, open at the top

    SUNWARE perfectly organised Square folding crate, 46 litres, 54 × 38 × 26.5 cm

An open folding crate rather than a lidded camp box: no lid is described anywhere on the listing, so nothing stacks on it and nothing keeps rain out of it.

    Internal dimensions
    Not published on the listing
    External dimensions
54 × 38 × 26.5 cm — stated explicitly as the external measurement, in the title and again in the capacity bullet
    Capacity
46 litres — stated three times across the title and bullets
    Lids stack
Not published on the listing — no lid is described anywhere on the listing, so there is nothing to stack on and nothing to state a rating for
    Latch type
Not published on the listing — the maker describes a crate that folds up and down quickly, with no catch or fastening named
    Seal type
    Not published on the listing
    Material
High-quality plastic — stated, in anthracite; the polymer itself is not named
    Stated lid load rating
Not published on the listing — there is no lid, and no load figure of any kind appears on the listing
    Amazon reference
B00J716YW6 (same reference on 6 Amazon marketplaces)
    EAN
    8711112573062
    • States its external dimensions plainly and labels them as external, which is the figure that decides a boot floor
    • Two integrated handles rather than cut-out grips in the wall
    • No lid at all, so it is an open crate and not a camp box

Best for: The boot of a car, carrying kit that does not mind being open to the weather.

  2. Stimo folding crate in wood-effect plastic with a knurled aluminium-look handle

Stimo Premium folding crate, 60 litres, 30 kg carrying load

A lidless folding crate with the flattest published fold on this shelf at 5.5 centimetres, whose 30 kilogram figure is a carrying load and not a lid rating.

    Internal dimensions
    Not published on the listing
    External dimensions
    60 × 40 × 28 cm as length, width and height — stated; folded, 60 × 40 × 5.5 cm, stated
    Capacity
60 litres — stated in the title and repeated in the measurements bullet
    Lids stack
Not published on the listing — the title calls the crate stackable and no lid is described in any bullet, so what stacks on what is never said
    Latch type
Four securing catches that are pushed in once the side panels are upright — stated as part of the assembly system, and described as what gives the crate its stability rather than as a closure
    Seal type
    Not published on the listing
    Material
Very robust plastic in a wood-effect finish, made in Europe — stated; the polymer itself is not named
    Stated lid load rating
Not published on the listing — the 30 kg figure the maker publishes is the load the crate carries, stated for transport, and there is no lid for it to describe
    Amazon reference
B0FHBFV7X9 (same reference on 6 Amazon marketplaces)
    EAN
    4251031438188
    • Folds to 5.5 cm high, the flattest fold published on this shelf

Best for: A car boot where the crate spends more time folded than filled.

    Lids stack
Not published on the listing — no lid is described anywhere; the maker describes crates that fold quickly for space-saving storage when not in use
    Latch type
Not published on the listing — a patented folding mechanism is named, which is how the crate erects rather than how anything closes
    Seal type
    Not published on the listing
    Material
Polypropylene with TPE — stated, free of BPA and plasticisers, described as suitable for food contact and as releasing no harmful substances; the only listing on this shelf to name its polymer
    Stated lid load rating
Not published on the listing — the 50 kg the maker publishes is a maximum carrying load for the crate, and there is no lid
    Amazon reference
B07ST6MQ7Z (same reference on 6 Amazon marketplaces)
    EAN
    4052396051582
    • Names the polymer as PP with TPE, which none of the other five listings here do
    • States a food-contact suitability and the absence of BPA and plasticisers
    • No lid, so it is a pair of open crates rather than camp boxes

Best for: A camp kitchen where the crates carry food and get wiped out afterwards.

    Capacity
60 litres — stated in the title

    • No lid, and the whole sheet is written for a crate that is meant to be open

Best for: A garage, a cellar or a boot, where a Euro footprint and a stacking figure are worth more than a lid.

Best for: A pitch where the box is stacked and still has to be opened without unstacking it.
