The best headlamps for 2026

The number on the box is peak lumens, and it is the least useful figure in the category. Makers who publish to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 convention give three figures together — lumens, beam distance in metres and runtime — and the runtime is defined as the point at which output has fallen to a tenth of its initial value. That definition is the whole subject: an unregulated lamp reaches its stated hours by dimming steadily from the first minute, while a regulated lamp holds a level output and then drops. Two lamps with identical specification sheets can behave completely differently on an hour-long descent for that reason. The peak mode itself is usually held for a couple of minutes before thermal management steps the lamp down, so read what the maker states for the sustained setting rather than the burst. Then the practical fittings: battery type, where a rechargeable pack saves weight and an AAA-compatible lamp can be revived anywhere; the IP rating, quoted for dust and water ingress; a red mode that leaves night vision alone; a lock mode that stops the lamp switching itself on in the pack; and weight on the head. We compare stated lumens, beam distance and runtime with the standard quoted, whether output is regulated, battery type, IP rating, weight and lock and red modes.

The ones worth carrying

  1. Winzwon USB-C rechargeable, 68 g stated, 6 h and 11 h stated

    Rechargeable headlamp · 96 m beam distance stated · 6 h high and 11 h low, stated · IPX4 · about 68 g · no lumen figure

The one lamp here that publishes a runtime beside the mode it applies to — about 6 hours on high and about 11 on low — and never gives a lumen figure at all.

Best for: A first rechargeable head torch for evening walks and camp chores, bought on the hours rather than on a lumen claim.

  2. Aaizplz pack of two, 2000 lumens stated, 1200 mAh, 3.5 oz stated

    Rechargeable headlamp, pack of two · 2000 lumens stated · 300 to 500 m illumination range stated · 230° spread · IPX4 · 3.5 oz · no runtime

A two-pack claiming 2000 lumens and a 300 to 500 metre illumination range, with a 1200 mAh cell behind it and no runtime published at any setting.

Best for: A buyer who wants two wide-beam lamps for a household and will treat the headline figures as marketing.

  3. Blukar USB-C rechargeable, 1200 mAh, stepless dimming, 8 modes

Rechargeable headlamp · stepless dimming · 8 modes including 3 gesture modes · 1200 mAh over USB-C · no lumens, no distance, no runtime, no weight, no IP code

A stepless-dimming rechargeable head torch that publishes its battery capacity and its mode count, and none of the four figures the category is compared on.

Best for: A cheap, comfortable camp and commuting lamp for a buyer who will judge it in the hand rather than on a specification sheet.

  4. Hyted 8 LEDs, 18,000 lumens stated, red rear light

Rechargeable headlamp · 8 LEDs · 18,000 lumens stated · 8 modes · red rear light on the battery box · no runtime, no distance, no IP code, no weight

An eight-LED lamp claiming 18,000 lumens and publishing no runtime, no beam distance, no weight and no IP code behind the word waterproof.

Best for: Night work and road visibility where the rear red light earns its place, bought in the knowledge that the headline number is unverifiable.

  5. Lepro USB-C rechargeable, 1200 mAh, 150 m stated, 81 g stated

    Rechargeable headlamp · 150 m beam distance stated · 4.5 to 37 h stated, no mode attached · 1200 mAh · IPX4 · 81 g

A rechargeable head torch that publishes a 150 metre beam, an 81 g weight and a runtime range of 4.5 to 37 hours — without saying which end belongs to which mode.

Best for: A light rechargeable lamp for dog walks and camp, where 150 metres of reach matters more than an audited hour figure.

  6. MLIAIMCE pack of two, 2000 lumens stated, 1500 mAh, 3.2 oz stated

    Rechargeable headlamp, pack of two · 2000 lumens stated · 300 to 500 m illumination range stated · 18 modes · 1500 mAh · IPX4 · 3.2 oz with batteries

A two-pack with eighteen modes including red, blue and red-and-blue, a 1500 mAh cell and a 3.2 ounce stated weight — and, like most of this shelf, no runtime at all.

Best for: A pair of lamps for a household or a work van, chosen for the mode list rather than for any measured hours.

  7. Suright pack of two, 140 lumens stated, 3 × AAA

AAA headlamp, pack of two · 140 lumens stated · 10 m beam distance stated · IPX4 · 0.08 kg per lamp · no runtime

A two-pack of AAA head torches — the only lamps here running on cells you can swap in the dark — publishing 140 lumens and a 10 metre beam and not one hour of runtime.

Best for: Camp chores and a spare in the car, where cells bought in a village shop matter more than reach.

  8. TravelHawk XL, 18,000 lumens stated, 8 modes, carry case included

Rechargeable headlamp · 18,000 lumens stated · 8 modes with red and warning flash · 90° adjustable · carry case included · no runtime, no distance, no IP code, no weight

An XL lamp claiming 18,000 lumens, a red mode and a carry case, publishing no runtime, no beam distance, no weight and no IP code behind the word waterproof.

Best for: A camp and site lamp for a buyer who wants a red mode and a case, and treats the headline figure as advertising.

    ≈ 25 €

  9. Ledlenser H8R, 600 lm, 150 m, up to 120 h stated

Rechargeable headlamp · 600 lm, 150 m and up to 120 h all stated · focusing optic · red rear light · IP54 in the title and IPX4 in the bullets

The only lamp in this hub to publish lumens, beam distance and runtime together — and the listing gives two different ingress ratings, IP54 in the title and IPX4 in the bullets.

Best for: A buyer who wants a focusing beam and three published figures, and will write to the maker about which ingress rating is the real one.
