Filter makers quote a stated flow rate in litres per minute. It is a manufacturer measurement, taken on a new cartridge under conditions the manufacturer sets, and it is one of the three numbers that make a filter comparable — the others being the micron rating and the cartridge life in litres.

Because the conditions belong to the maker rather than to a shared standard, two flow rates are best used to rank filters within a listing rather than to predict minutes at a stream. The number is real; it just describes a moment that has already passed by the time you are using the thing.

Why the rate falls

An element works by holding material back, and the material it holds back stays on it. As a cartridge loads, the effective area available to pass water shrinks, and the rate drops. That is the mechanism, and it applies to every format on the shelf.

The rate at which it happens is set by the water going in rather than by the filter. Water carrying visible sediment loads an element far faster than clear water from the same catchment, which is why makers of squeeze and gravity systems talk about letting water settle or pre-straining it before it reaches the cartridge. Nothing about that changes what the element is rated at; it changes how quickly the rating stops describing the flow.

A finer element also starts lower. Where a maker offers two cartridges for the same housing at different micron ratings, the finer one usually publishes the smaller flow figure, and that trade is stated rather than hidden.

What the maker gives you to restore it

Most filters ship with a way to reverse some of the loading. A backflush syringe or coupling pushes clean water back through the element in the opposite direction, and the instructions state how often to do it and with what. Some makers specify a shake or a tap instead; some in-line units are designed to be backflushed from the bottle itself.

This is the part of the specification that decides the daily experience over a week away, and it is worth reading before buying rather than after the flow has gone. A cartridge with no field cleaning method at all is a cartridge that gets slower in one direction only.

Storage, freezing and the end of the element

Two things end cartridges before their stated litres. The first is being put away wet and left, and the manufacturer’s storage instructions cover it. The second is freezing, which is the reason those instructions exist in the form they do: an element that has been frozen cannot be checked by looking at it, and makers state plainly what to do about it. Follow that guidance rather than a rule of thumb.

Reading the two figures together

The honest way to compare filters is to read the flow rate and the cartridge life as a pair. A high flow figure on an element rated for a small number of litres describes a fast filter with a short service life; a lower flow figure against a capacity ten times larger describes a different purchase entirely. Divide the running cost by the litres the maker publishes rather than comparing the headline rates.

And keep the boundary where it belongs. Flow describes how fast water passes an element. Whether water from a particular source is fit to drink is a question for the manufacturer’s instructions and for the local authorities, not for a specification sheet and not for this page.
