What the number refers to

A filter element is a barrier with holes in it. The micron rating, written µm, is the manufacturer’s statement of how large those holes are. Hollow-fibre cartridges, which make up the bulk of what is sold for walking and bivvying, are commonly stated at 0.1 or 0.2 µm, and makers in this family quote the figure to two decimal places precisely because the gap between those two values is the whole specification.

That figure is a manufacturer specification and nothing else. It is published by the company that made the element, arrived at by whatever method that company uses, and it belongs to the element rather than to the housing, the hose or the bottle it is fitted to. Where a cartridge is sold as a spare part, the rating travels with the cartridge.

What a micron rating does not settle

A pore size describes a barrier. It does not describe an outcome, it says nothing about what is dissolved in the water rather than suspended in it, and it says nothing about how the element has been stored or handled since it left the factory.

It also does not settle whether water from a given source is fit to drink. That question belongs to the manufacturer’s own instructions, which state what a product is intended for and what it is not, and to the local authorities responsible for the water in the place you are standing. This site reports the figure the maker publishes and goes no further, because that is where the competence of a comparison page ends.

Read it beside flow rate and cartridge life

Three published figures make a filter comparable, and the micron rating is only the first.

The stated flow rate, in litres per minute, is measured on a clean element. It falls as the cartridge loads with the material it has held back, so it is a starting point rather than a promise, and a finer element generally starts lower.

The cartridge life, quoted in litres, is what decides the running cost of the thing, and across the shelf it varies by more than an order of magnitude. A rating quoted without a capacity beside it tells you what the element is built to do and nothing about how long it will do it for.

Compare all three at once, in the maker’s own units, and the differences between two cartridges of the same nominal rating become obvious.

The fittings around the element

Once the rating is settled, the questions are mechanical. Does the housing take a standard bottle thread — a 28 mm neck is the common one where a cartridge screws directly onto a bottle or a pouch? Does the maker supply a backflush syringe or coupling to restore flow, and does it state how often to use it? Squeeze bottles, in-line units on a hydration hose, gravity bags for a group and pump filters that draw from shallow water all use elements described by the same kind of number, and they behave completely differently over a day.

What ends an element early

Two things do most of the damage, and both are covered in the instructions rather than in the specification. The first is neglect of backflushing, which lets flow collapse long before the stated litres are reached. The second is freezing: makers publish storage instructions for a reason, and an element that has frozen cannot be inspected from the outside.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on storage, cleaning and replacement. They are the document that governs the product, and no rating on a listing page replaces them.

They are different published figures for different membranes, and the smaller number describes a finer pore. Makers state what each element is intended to reduce, and their instructions are the only place that answer belongs. Read the rating together with the flow rate and the cartridge life, because a finer element usually trades against both.

Does the micron rating belong to the filter or to the cartridge?

To the cartridge. The rating is a property of the element, so it travels with the spare part rather than with the housing, the hose or the bottle it screws into. When you replace a cartridge, you are replacing the thing the number describes.
