Colour temperature in kelvin describes the tint of the light, not its quantity, and the two are published separately. It is the specification that decides whether an evening under the lantern feels like a fireside or a kitchen, and it is worth choosing deliberately rather than accepting whatever the model happens to emit.
What the kelvin figure describes
A lower kelvin figure is a warmer, more amber light. A higher figure is a cooler, bluer white. The scale is a description of tint and nothing else: it says nothing about how much light there is, which is the lumen figure, and nothing about how long that light lasts, which is the runtime published alongside it.
Some lanterns publish a single fixed figure. Others offer two or three tints, or a continuous adjustment between them, and state the range in kelvin. Where a lantern is adjustable, check whether the output and runtime figures change with the tint, because on many designs the warm setting and the cool setting are different LEDs drawing different currents.
Warm light for sitting, cooler light for finding
The trade is straightforward once it is named. A warmer tint is easier to sit under for a whole evening. It produces less glare at eye level, it is kinder to night vision when someone looks up, and it makes a pitch feel like somewhere you want to stay.
A cooler tint gives more apparent contrast on ground detail, which is what you want when you are hunting for a dropped tent peg in grass or checking a guyline. It is also the tint most cheap lanterns default to, because cooler LEDs are usually the more efficient ones — which is why so many camp lights feel like a corridor.
If you buy one fixed tint, buy the one that suits the hours you will spend under it. Sitting is most of the evening; searching is a few minutes, and a headlamp does that job better anyway.
Colour rendering, where it is published
A handful of makers publish a colour rendering index, describing how faithfully colours appear under the light against a reference source. Most do not publish it at all, which makes it hard to compare across a shelf.
It matters where telling one colour from another counts: reading a coloured map, telling one cable from another, judging whether food is cooked. Where a maker publishes the figure, it is worth noting. Where none does, colour temperature is the only tint specification you have.

Colour temperature is a comfort choice sitting on top of the figures that decide whether the lantern is usable at all.
The output figure and the runtime published at each level are the pair that matters, and only makers worth reading publish them together. A maximum output normally applies to a boost mode that lasts a small fraction of the charge, so the runtime stated for the middle setting is the one an evening actually uses.
Then the power arrangement. A sealed lithium-ion pack recharges over USB-C and often doubles as a power bank, which is convenient until the cells age and the whole lantern is spent. Replaceable cells weigh more and cost more over time and can be swapped in the dark.
The fittings that decide whether the tint is even seen
A lantern on the ground lights the ground, whatever its colour temperature. A diffuser is what stops a bare emitter glaring at eye level and lets the tint do its work. A hook, loop or magnet is what gets the light above the table.
An IPX rating says whether it can hang outside in rain. Together with output, runtime, tint and power source, that is the full set: five published fields, and a lantern that omits the runtime has omitted the important one.
