How many lumens do I need for a headlamp?

A lumen figure is a peak output, and a peak with no runtime beside it is not a measure. Almost every argument about headlamp brightness is really an argument about two different minutes of the same night.

What the headline number describes

The number printed largest is the output at the highest setting, taken with a full battery. Makers who publish to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 convention give three figures together — lumens, beam distance in metres and runtime — and the grouping is the whole point. Read singly, the lumen figure tells you what the lamp can do for a moment. Read together, the three describe a lamp you can plan around.

The peak mode is also the mode nobody stays in. Output at maximum generates heat, and thermal management steps the lamp down after a short period. What the maker states for the sustained setting is the honest column, and it is usually printed some way below the headline.

The setting a night actually uses

Walking a path with your own footfall to light needs far less output than the packaging assumes. The useful question is not how many lumens the lamp reaches but how many it holds, and for how long. Most makers publish a runtime for a middle setting, and that pairing — output at that level, hours at that level — is the one to compare across a shelf.

Camp tasks sit lower again. Cooking, reading and finding something in a pack are close work, where a high output mostly wrecks the night vision of everyone facing you. This is why a red mode exists on lamps that have one: it does the same close job without resetting your eyes.

Regulated output changes the answer

Runtime under FL1 is defined as the point at which output has fallen to a tenth of its initial value. That definition is why two lamps quoting the same hours can be so unalike. An unregulated lamp reaches its stated runtime by dimming steadily from the first minute, spending most of that time somewhere well below the number on the box. A regulated lamp holds a level output and then drops away.

Makers who regulate output generally say so, because it is the more expensive design. Where nothing is stated, assume the output curve slopes. It changes what you should buy: a lamp with a modest regulated output can be more use over four hours than one with a large peak and no regulation.

Beam distance is a separate specification

Beam distance in metres describes how far the light throws before it falls to a defined low level, and it is set by the optics as much as by the output. A wide flood at a given lumen figure lights the ground in front of your boots; a tight spot at the same figure reaches down the trail and lights very little to the sides. Lamps that offer both, or a mixed beam, publish the distance for each.

Distance matters when you are looking for a marker, a path junction or a reflective guyline. It matters much less when you are walking, which is why a lamp bought on beam distance alone often feels wrong on a footpath.

What to write down before comparing

Four fields settle it. The sustained output the maker publishes rather than the burst; the runtime at that setting; whether output is regulated; and the standard named beside the figures. Add the battery arrangement, because a rechargeable pack and an AAA-compatible lamp fail in different ways, and add the weight on the head, which is what you notice by the fourth hour.

Two lamps quoting figures from different conventions, or from none, cannot be lined up against each other. That is not a small caveat: it is usually the entire difference between the two products.

Not on its own. A higher peak often comes from a lamp that steps down sooner or empties its cell faster, so the useful comparison is the output the maker publishes for the sustained setting alongside the hours it holds. Two lamps with the same peak can behave very differently an hour into a descent.

Why does the box quote a lumen figure but no runtime?

Because the peak is the easiest number to advertise. Makers who publish to the ANSI/PLATO FL1 convention give lumens, beam distance and runtime as a set, and that is the specification worth looking for. Where only a lumen figure appears, treat it as a marketing number rather than a performance one.
