A gas stove fades in the cold because the fuel has to vaporise inside the canister to reach the burner, and the colder it is the less readily it does that. Nothing is broken. The physics is in the canister, not in the stove.
What is happening in the canister
A threaded or bayonet canister holds liquefied gas under its own vapour pressure. The burner draws vapour from the top; the liquid below replaces it by boiling. As the temperature drops, that vapour pressure falls, the flow to the burner falls with it, and the flame goes small and yellow and stops responding to the valve.
Two other things push in the same direction. Vaporising the fuel takes heat out of the canister, so a stove running hard chills its own supply — which is why a flame that started fine fades over a few minutes. And the canister sits on cold ground, which keeps the whole thing at ambient.
The gas mix is the specification that decides it
Makers publish the proportions of propane, isobutane and butane in the canister, and this is the number to read before a cold trip.
Propane vaporises at the lowest temperature of the three and is what keeps a canister working when it is cold; it also raises the pressure the steel shell has to contain, which is why the proportion is limited. Isobutane sits in the middle. Plain butane is the one that gives up first, and butane-heavy mixes are what you find in the cheapest canisters and in most pierceable cartridges.
Two canisters of identical shape and net weight can behave very differently on the same morning for this reason alone. The mix is printed on the canister and in the specification.
Why a part-used canister is worse
The components do not leave together. The lighter, more volatile fraction vaporises preferentially, so a canister that has been run for several meals holds a mix richer in the heavy components than the one printed on the label.
That is why a nearly empty canister on a cold morning is the weakest combination in camping: low pressure from temperature, low pressure from level, and a residual mix that is the hardest of the three to vaporise. Starting a cold trip with a fresh canister is the cheapest fix available.
What the stove itself contributes
Some canister stoves fit a pressure regulator and say so in the specification. A regulator holds the gas flow more constant as canister pressure falls, which does not create pressure but does keep the burner usable further down the curve.
Remote-canister stoves place the canister to one side on a hose, and many can run with the canister inverted so liquid feeds a preheat tube — a design intended for cold weather, and one where the maker’s instructions are specific about how it must be done.
Liquid fuel stoves are pressurised by pump rather than by vapour pressure, which is why they are bought for cold weather in the first place. They are heavier, need priming and maintenance, and are a different purchase rather than a fix for the one you own.
What to check before assuming cold is the cause
A stove that has faded may simply be dirty or badly matched. Check that the valve fitting is the one the stove manual names — a threaded EN 417 canister and a bayonet stove are not interchangeable, and neither is a pierceable cartridge.
Check the jet for soot or debris and the O-ring in the stove’s fitting for damage, since a partly blocked jet and a cold canister look identical at the burner.
Then read the stated output in watts and the boil time with the water volume it was measured with. Those figures are measured under the maker’s own conditions and describe a warm canister on a bench. Cold performance is not what they describe, and the canister’s own handling instructions govern how it may be used and stored.

A windshield addresses wind, which is a separate problem, and it comes with its own instruction. Makers of upright canister stoves generally state that a full wrap-around shield must not be used because it traps heat around the canister. Follow the stove manual rather than the shield packaging.
