No. Condensation is moisture from inside the tent settling on a cold fabric, and it appears on exactly the nights when rain does not. It is the single most common thing mistaken for a leaking flysheet, and telling them apart takes about a minute.
Where the water comes from
A sleeping person puts a substantial amount of water vapour into the air overnight, through breath and through skin. Damp ground adds more, and so does anything wet brought inside — a fly sheet packed away wet, boots, a cooking pot. That vapour rises, meets the flysheet, and the flysheet is cold because it faces a clear sky.
Air can only hold so much moisture at a given temperature. Cooled at the fabric, it gives up the surplus as liquid on the surface, and that surface is the inside of your shelter.
Why the worst nights are the clear ones
This is the diagnostic that settles it. Condensation is worst when the air is still and the sky is clear, because the fabric radiates heat to the sky and gets colder than the air around it, and because nothing is carrying the damp air away.
Rain does the opposite. A windy, overcast, wet night moves air through the shelter and keeps the fly closer to air temperature. So a tent that is soaked inside after a dry, calm, cold night has a condensation problem, and a tent that drips during heavy rain has something else going on.
What a leak looks like instead
A leak has a source. It appears at a seam, at a zip, at a peg-out point that is taking strain, or at a patch of fabric that has been abraded — and it needs weather to produce it.
Two parts of the specification are relevant. The hydrostatic head, published in millimetres for the fly and separately for the floor, describes the coated fabric. Taped seams describe the stitching, and they are a separate claim, because a needle hole is a hole whatever the coating is rated at. A tent with a high hydrostatic head and untaped seams can genuinely leak in rain.
There is also a third case that is neither: wetting out, where the outer face has stopped repelling and holds a film of water. That makes a fly heavy and cold and can drive condensation harder on the inside, without a drop passing through the fabric.
What reduces it
Ventilation, mostly. Air moving through the shelter carries damp air out before it reaches the fabric, which is why makers fit vents at the high points of a fly and why leaving a door slightly open in still weather does more than shutting everything tight.
Pitch matters too. A tent that is not touching its inner keeps the wet surface away from you; where an inner presses against a fly, water transfers straight through by contact. Pitching taut is what maintains that gap, and on silicone-coated nylon that means retensioning once the fabric is wet, since it stretches when it takes up water — silicone-coated polyester barely moves and holds its pitch.
Where you camp changes it as well. A pitch beside water or in a hollow sits in damper, colder air all night than one a few metres higher.
Single-skin shelters, tarps and bivy bags
The less material between you and the outside, the more condensation matters. A bivy bag is the extreme case: its hydrostatic head is rarely the problem, and the figure that describes how it handles your own moisture is breathability — a moisture vapour transmission rate in grams per square metre per twenty-four hours, or a RET value — quoted with the test the maker names, since the scales are not interchangeable.
A tarp goes the other way. It has no enclosed volume at all, air moves under it freely, and condensation is largely somebody else’s problem.

Look at where it is and when it happened. Condensation coats the inner face of the flysheet evenly and is worst on a still, clear, cold night; a leak appears at a seam, a zip or a worn patch and needs rain to produce it. Wiping a panel and watching whether it returns from the inside settles most cases.
Does a double-wall tent get less condensation?
It does not necessarily form less, but the inner tent keeps you away from it. In a single-skin shelter, a bivy bag or a tarp pitched low, the wet surface is the one nearest your sleeping bag, which is why those designs make more of ventilation.
