A bladder is bought for drinking without breaking stride; a bottle is bought for seeing the level, cleaning it easily, and screwing other kit onto it. Both carry water, and almost everything else about them differs.
What the bladder is really sold on
A hydration bladder is shopped on stated capacity in litres, and that is the least useful figure on the page. Capacity decides how much water you carry; everything else decides whether you will still be using the reservoir next season.
Start with the opening. A wide slide-top or a full-width screw cap can be turned back on itself and dried; a narrow port cannot, and a bladder that never dries properly is a bladder that gets thrown away.
Then the hose, where three separate specifications hide. Internal diameter sets how hard you have to draw. The bite valve decides whether a shut-off version exists at all, which is what stops a pack soaking itself in transit. And the quick-disconnect at the reservoir decides whether you can lift the bladder out to refill without threading the tube back through the pack every time.
What the bottle is really sold on
A bottle is a hub for other kit, and the specification that decides what attaches to it is mouth diameter. The 63 mm wide mouth is the de facto standard that filters, gravity bags and insulated sleeves are built around; a narrow 42 mm mouth drinks more cleanly on the move and accepts far less. Check the figure before assuming a filter or a lid will fit, because the two families do not interchange.
Material sets weight and behaviour: copolyester is light, clear and lets you see the level; HDPE is lighter still and slightly flexible; single-wall stainless takes boiling water where the maker says so; double-wall insulated stainless holds temperature and roughly doubles the stated empty weight, which you carry all day whether the bottle is full or not.
The honest trade
The bladder wins on drinking behaviour. Having a valve at your shoulder means you sip constantly instead of rationing between stops, and that changes how a long day goes more than any specification does.
The bottle wins on everything after the walk. You can see how much is left, refill from a tap in seconds, hang it to dry in an hour, freeze it, and screw a filter onto it. And when a bottle fails it leaks onto your boots rather than into your sleeping bag.
Where the decision usually lands
Many people carry both: a reservoir for the walking hours and a bottle for the camp, for mixing drinks, and as the thing a filter threads onto. That is not indecision — the two objects are doing different jobs.
If you carry only one, ask which failure you would rather have. A bladder that will not dry, or a bottle you have to stop and unclip to use. Then read the fill port width against the tap you actually fill from, and, for the bottle, read the thread against the filter or gravity bag you already own. Adapters exist, they leak more often than the bottle does, and they are one more thing to lose.
