Check whether the figure is per pole or for the pair before comparing anything, because both conventions are in use and neither is always labelled. A pole listed at a weight that looks impossibly low is usually a single pole; one that looks heavy for its class is usually a pair.
How to tell which you are reading
Where a listing sells poles only as a pair — which most do — a weight given without qualification is ambiguous. Two things usually resolve it: a specification table that says “per pole” or “pair”, and the plausibility of the number against other poles of the same length and material.
Where a maker publishes both, use the per-pole figure for comparisons and the pair figure for what goes on your back. Where only one appears and it is not labelled, treat the comparison as uncertain rather than assuming.
What the weight is actually made of
Shaft material is the headline but not the whole story. An aluminium alloy shaft bends before it fails and can often be straightened; carbon is lighter and stiffer and fails suddenly, and it dislikes being levered sideways between rocks.
Underneath that, three things add grams: the lock mechanism, the grip material — cork, EVA foam or rubber — and the section count, since every joint is hardware. A three-section pole with external lever locks carries more metal than a fixed-length one, and it is the mechanism most walkers should look for anyway, because it can be tightened in the field with cold hands.
Packed length usually decides more than weight
Packed length is the figure that rules poles in or out, and it is the one to check first. It decides whether the poles travel on the outside of a pack or inside a suitcase — and a pole that will not go inside hold luggage becomes a pole you leave at home.
Z-fold poles use an internal cord and a push-button, pack shortest, and adjust over the smallest range. Telescopic poles pack longer and adjust further. Set the packed length against the stated maximum length, which has to suit your height and the descent.
Where the weight goes back on
Baskets are consumable and a proprietary fitting is one you will hunt for. Snow baskets are larger and heavier than the summer ones fitted at the factory, and rubber tip protectors are another small addition. None of these is in the shaft weight comparison, and all of them are in your hands on the day.
And the weight it takes off
If the poles are also the poles your shelter pitches on, they stop being an accessory and become structure. A trekking-pole tent has no pole set of its own, so the poles you were carrying anyway hold it up — which is where the lightest published shelter weights on the shelf come from.
That is the one case where a pole’s weight belongs in the shelter arithmetic rather than beside it, and it is worth writing down explicitly so the same grams are not counted twice.

Do the baskets and tips count in the published weight?
Usually yes, since they are fitted when the pole ships, but the figure rarely says so. Snow baskets are a separate accessory with their own stated weight, and swapping summer baskets for snow ones changes what you carry.
Is carbon always lighter than aluminium?
Carbon shafts generally publish lower weights for the same length, but the lock mechanism, grip and shaft diameter all contribute, so a heavy-duty carbon pole can weigh more than a light alloy one. Compare the published figures rather than the material name.
