How do I pitch a tarp with trekking poles?

The poles set the height, the ridgeline sets the shape, and the tie-out count sets how many pitches you get. A walk through the order that actually works.

A trekking pole pitch works because the pole sets the height and the guylines do everything else — so the ridge goes up first and the sides come later. Get that order wrong and you spend the whole pitch chasing wrinkles.

What the tarp needs to have

Not every tarp is meant for this. Look at the apex: a tarp designed to be pole-pitched has a reinforced point, a grommet, or a small webbing loop that a pole tip locates in. A plain sheet with a single stitched tie-out will take a pole tip through it eventually.

Count the tie-outs and look at how they are reinforced. Each one is a pitch you can improvise, and each one is a stress point. A tarp with tie-outs only at the corners gives you one shape; one with mid-panel and side tie-outs gives you several.

Check what is in the bag before you leave. Many tarps are sold without guylines, pegs or a ridgeline, and the weight in the listing may be the bare canopy.

The sequence that works

Peg the two ridge ends first, along the line the ridge will run, with the fabric flat on the ground and moderately tensioned between them. That fixes the ridge length before anything is standing.

Raise the first pole under the apex, adjust it to the height you want, and take up the guyline from that end. Then raise the second. On a lever lock pole you can adjust height by centimetres while it is standing, which is the practical argument for lever locks over twist locks here.

Only then peg the sides. Work opposite pairs rather than going round in a circle, because each side you tension slackens the one facing it.

Finish by walking round once and taking the last of the slack out. The panel should be smooth with no standing wrinkles, and pressing it should give a few centimetres rather than none.

Height, and what it costs

Pole height is the one variable you set freely, and it is the whole character of the shelter. A high ridge gives headroom, airflow and a view, and exposes far more area to wind and rain. A low ridge is dark and cramped and sheds weather.

Because trekking poles adjust, you can change your mind. Note the stated maximum length of your poles against the ridge height the tarp is cut for — a tarp designed around a longer pole than you carry will not reach its intended shape.

The shapes to know

A rectangle is the most versatile and the noisiest in wind. It pitches as an A-frame over a ridgeline, as a lean-to with one edge to the ground, or flat as a sun shade.

A hexagonal or catenary cut tarp has curved edges sewn to pitch taut with fewer wrinkles in the shapes it was designed for. It is quieter and sheds better, and it gives up the improvised flat pitches.

The pitch to know if you learn only one is the lean-to: one edge pegged to the ground on the weather side, the opposite edge lifted on two poles. It is quick, it uses few pegs, and it can be dropped closer to the ground as conditions change.

Retensioning, and the fabric that makes you

Silicone-coated nylon absorbs water and stretches when wet, so a taut pitch sags after rain and needs a pass round the lines. Silicone-coated polyester barely stretches and is heavier for the same denier. Dyneema composite neither stretches nor absorbs water.

Read which one you own before the trip. If it is nylon, set your line-locks where you can reach them from underneath, and expect at least one retension in the night.

Should the pole handle go up or down?

Most tarps are pitched with the pole inverted, tip upwards, so the tip locates in a grommet, a reinforced apex or a small loop. Check what the maker states, because some tarps have a cupped apex meant for the handle instead, and a tip pushed against unreinforced fabric will find its way through.

Does a catenary cut tarp still pitch flat?

No, and that is the trade. Curved edges are sewn to pitch taut with fewer wrinkles in the shapes the maker intended, which is quieter in wind, but it costs you the flat and improvised pitches a plain rectangle keeps. Choose the cut for the pitches you expect to use.
