TREKOLOGY TALU MINI review

The lightest and flattest table in this group — 520 grams folding to under two centimeters thick — with an aluminum top on stainless steel legs rated for 44 pounds.

On the maker’s own page

A compact mini camping table, portable, ultralight, folding, with pop-up legs and no tools for setup.

TREKOLOGY states a weight of 520 g (18.3 oz) / 18.3 oz, folding to 14 × 5 × 0.7 inches (35.6 × 12.7 × 1.78 cm (14 × 5 × 0.7 in)); a 20 kg (44.1 lb) / 44 lbs bearing capacity with a surface of 14 × 9.9 inches (36 × 25 cm); a waterproof, easy-to-clean design with a sturdy aluminum table top and stainless steel legs; and a carry bag included.

No deployed height. No foot design. No top construction.

One point seven eight centimeters

The figure that decides whether it is carried.

This shelf’s buying tip is about boot space; for a pack the equivalent is thickness. A table that folds flat slides down the back of a rucksack. A table that folds to a bundle takes the place of a sleeping bag.

Four of the seven tables in this group publish a packed size. The next flattest is 5.1 centimeters. This is under two.

Five hundred and twenty grams

Published to the gram and to the ounce.

The lightest table in this group, and about half the next — the 998-gram aluminum table here, which is itself sold as ultralight.

Forty-four pounds over a quarter of a square meter

Rating and area, read together.

This shelf’s introduction says the stated load rating is published for a load spread evenly across the top rather than for someone leaning on a corner. Twenty kilograms across 36 by 25 centimeters is a dense load; the same twenty kilograms across the 29.7 by 21.8 inch top elsewhere in this group is a thin one.

A stove, a pot and a plate is what this top holds.

Stainless legs

The only ones in this group.

The top is a flat aluminum sheet and water runs off it. The legs are tubes that take the bending and stand in wet grass, and stainless steel neither pits nor flexes as much as aluminum of the same wall.

What is not published is the tube diameter — and the camp-chair shelf in this catalog makes the point that the diameter says more about stiffness than the material name does.

TREKOLOGY’s instructions carry the setup and the load rating. Nothing here replaces them, and nothing on this page describes any product as safe.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • The lightest table in this group at 520 g (18.3 oz), published to the gram and the ounce
  • Folds to 1.78 cm (0.7 in) thick — the flattest pack here, and what lets it go in a backpack
  • Publishes its load rating in both units: 20 kg (44.1 lb) and 44 lbs
  • The only table in this group on stainless steel legs
  • Publishes its top area, 36 × 25 cm (14.2 × 9.8 in), rather than an overall footprint
  • Pop-up legs with no tools and no assembly order to remember
  • A carry bag included

Compromises

  • No deployed height, which this shelf's introduction makes the second decision
  • Forty-four pounds is the second-lowest rating in this group
  • A 36 by 25 cm (9.8 in) top holds a stove or two mugs and not a meal for two
  • No foot design, which decides whether the legs sink into soft grass
  • No top construction, so whether the aluminum is a sheet or slats is unstated
  • The smallest table here at close to the price of tables three times its area

What people ask before buying

How flat is 0.7 inches?

One point seven eight centimeters, which is the figure that matters more than the weight on this shelf. This shelf's buying tip says to measure the boot space left once the tent is in, and for a pack the equivalent question is thickness: a table that folds flat slides down the back of a rucksack, and one that folds to a bundle does not. Four of the seven tables in this group publish a packed size, and the next flattest is 5.1 centimeters. This one is under two.

What does 44 pounds cover?

A stove, a pot of water and a plate — which is what a 36 by 25 centimeter top holds anyway. This shelf's introduction is careful about this figure: the maker publishes it for a load spread evenly across the top rather than for someone leaning on a corner. Twenty kilograms spread over a quarter of a square meter is a lot of weight per square centimeter; the same figure on the 29.7 by 21.8 inch table in this group would be a different proposition. Rating and area have to be read together.

Why stainless legs?

Because the legs are the thin part. An aluminum top is a flat sheet and shrugs off water; a leg is a tube that takes the bending load and lives in wet grass. Stainless steel is heavier than aluminum and stiffer for the same wall, and it does not pit. No other table in this group names stainless — three name aluminum, one a steel tube of 16 by 0.6 mm (0.02 in), one simply a metal frame, and one publishes nothing. What is still missing here is the tube diameter, which the camp chair shelf in this catalog makes the same point about.
