Opliy OP0124, 16.5 in review

The highest load rating in this group at 172 pounds — on the one listing here that calls its top carbon steel in one bullet and lightweight aluminum alloy in another.

On the maker’s own page

A folding camping table for one to two people, 16.5 inches, with a carry bag.

Opliy states a 16.5 × 16.5 × 15.75-inch square table folding to 16.5 × 6.7 × 5.1 inches; an upgraded carbon steel tabletop with robust steel pipe legs in an X-frame design, supporting up to 172 pounds; a specialized frosted finish on the top and frame resistant to scratches, heat, water and dust; and a table crafted from lightweight aluminum alloy with a tote bag.

No weight. No foot design. No leg adjustment.

Carbon steel, and lightweight aluminum alloy

Two materials, one table, four bullets apart.

The fourth bullet: “upgraded carbon steel tabletop”, “robust steel pipe legs”. The sixth: “Crafted from lightweight aluminum alloy”.

This shelf’s introduction makes the top material one of the ten figures this shelf is compared on, and the two answers point in opposite directions. Steel would explain 172 pounds and contradict lightweight; aluminum would do the reverse.

Nothing else on the page settles it.

One hundred and seventy-two pounds

Two and a half times the next figure in this group.

Sixty-six pounds on an aluminum table. Sixty-five on a roll-top. Forty-four on a mini. Thirty-five on a canvas one.

This shelf’s introduction says the maker publishes this for a load spread evenly across the top rather than for someone leaning on a corner — and a 42-centimeter square has very little top to spread anything across. An X-frame in steel pipe is stiff, so the figure is not absurd. What it was measured against is not on the page.

Four hazards, named

Scratches. Heat. Water. Dust.

A frosted finish on the top and the frame, with the four things it is for written out rather than summarized as durable.

The heat one matters on a camp table, and the water one is the failure the introduction above names for laminate over fibreboard: it swells if it is put away wet. A finished metal top does not.

Opliy’s instructions carry the assembly and the load rating. Nothing here replaces them, and nothing on this page describes any product as safe.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • The highest stated load rating in this group at 172 lbs
  • Publishes its deployed and its packed dimensions in three figures each
  • An X-frame leg structure, named as the reason for the stability claim
  • A frosted finish stated against scratches, heat, water and dust — four named hazards
  • Pops up for immediate use, with no assembly order
  • A tote bag included

Compromises

  • Its own bullets give the top as carbon steel and as aluminum alloy
  • No weight published, on a table sold as lightweight
  • No foot design and no leg adjustment
  • A 42 cm (16.5 in) square top is a side table, not a dining table
  • Five of its six bullets open with a capitalized marketing heading rather than a figure
  • One hundred and seventy-two pounds is published without saying over what area it is spread

What people ask before buying

Steel or aluminum?

The listing says both. Its fourth bullet states an "upgraded carbon steel tabletop" with "robust steel pipe legs"; its sixth states that the table is "crafted from lightweight aluminum alloy". Those are different materials with different weights and different corrosion behavior, and this shelf's introduction treats the top material as one of the ten figures this shelf is compared on. A carbon steel top would explain the 172-pound rating and contradict the lightweight claim; an aluminum one would do the reverse. The maker is the place to settle it, and it is worth settling before ordering.

Is 172 pounds believable?

It is the published figure and it is two and a half times the next highest in this group — 66 pounds on an aluminum table, 65 on a roll-top, 44 on a mini, 35 on a canvas one. This shelf's introduction says the maker publishes the rating for a load spread evenly across the top rather than for someone leaning on a corner, and a 42-centimeter square has very little area to spread anything over. An X-frame in steel pipe is a genuinely stiff arrangement, so the figure is not absurd — but nothing on the page says what it was measured against.

What is the frosted finish for?

Scratches, heat, water and dust, by the listing’s own four words. Naming the hazards rather than saying durable is useful, and the heat claim matters on a camp table: this shelf's introduction does not raise it, but a stove on a coated top is how a finish is usually ruined. The other place it matters is water — this shelf's introduction notes that laminate over a fibreboard core swells if it is put away wet, which is the failure a metal top with a cured finish does not have.
