The maker states the shaft combines both, and states the combination gives natural spring and stability. Aluminum bends before it fails and can sometimes be straightened; carbon is lighter and stiffer and fails suddenly, and it dislikes being levered sideways between rocks. A combined shaft is a choice between those behaviors, and the listing does not say which section is which.
