How much the mat slows heat leaving your body into the ground. An air mat with no insulating structure inside can be thick and still cold, because convection moves heat around inside the chambers. Thickness and R-value are different questions, and only one of them is answered on this page.
On rough ground, often yes. Denier weighs the yarn: 75D is roughly twice the 40D used on most mats here, and it is the difference between a mat that shrugs off a pine needle and one that does not. It is also why this mat weighs 950 g and the lightest here weighs 550 g.
