Naturehike 650 fill power down bag, 20D nylon shell review

The only down bag in this group: it publishes a fill power, a down content, a shell denier and a comfort and limit pair — and still names no standard.

The bottom line The lightest and the best-specified bag of the nine on materials, and still missing the number that would make its fill power meaningful. For mild-weather backpacking at 760 g it is the obvious pick here; read the 0 °C as the maker's figure, not a tested one.

What this listing puts on record

An envelope-shaped hooded down bag at 210 × 75 cm in medium and 220 × 85 cm in large, net weights of 760 g and 885 g, a mesh storage bag and a compression sack, a fill of 85 % down treated to be water-repellent, a comfortable temperature above 5 °C, a limit temperature of 0 °C, 20D nylon for both fabric and lining, a YKK zip that opens from inside and out, and a bottom zip for warm nights. The title carries 650FP.

The number that needs a partner

650 fill power. That describes the down: a fixed mass of it lofts to 650 cubic inches. It is a quality measure, and a good one at this price.

And the fill weight is not published. Fill power without fill weight cannot tell you how warm the bag is. The listing gives the net weight of the whole bag — 760 g including shell, zip, hood and sack — which is not the same thing at all. Two bags at 650 fill power with different amounts of down inside will behave completely differently.

The temperatures, stated as a pair

Above 5 °C comfortable, 0 °C limit. Two figures, correctly separated, and no standard named for either. Under EN 13537 or ISO 23537 they would come from a heated mannequin under fixed conditions — an indication rather than a promise. Here they are the maker’s own.

The shell, and why 20D matters on down

20D nylon on both faces is thin, which is how the bag reaches 760 g. It is also what down needs: a tight, light weave that clusters cannot work their way through. The water-repellent treatment on the down itself is the other half of that answer, since damp down stops lofting.

Before ordering

Ask for the fill weight in grams. It is the one figure that would turn a good specification into a complete one, and any seller with the maker’s data sheet will have it.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • Publishes a fill power of 650 and a down content of 85 %, which is the pair that describes a down bag properly
  • Gives the shell and lining as 20D nylon, and states that the down is treated to be water-repellent
  • States comfort above 5 °C and a limit of 0 °C as two separate figures, and gives net weights for both sizes

Compromises

  • No fill weight — the grams of down actually in the bag, which is what fill power has to be read against
  • No packed size, despite a compression sack being supplied
  • No standard is named for the two temperature figures, so they cannot be lined up against a tested bag

What people ask before buying

Why is fill power useless on its own?

Fill power measures the volume a fixed mass of down lofts to — how good the down is. It says nothing about how much is in the bag. A 650 fill power bag with 200 g of down and one with 500 g are completely different products, and this listing publishes the quality and not the quantity.

What does an 85 % down content mean?

The fill is 85 % down cluster and the rest feather. Down clusters trap air; feathers add weight and quills. 85 % is a normal figure at this price, and stating it is more than most listings do.
