Osprey Hydraulics 3L review

The only American listing on this shelf to publish an empty weight — 0.52 pounds — with its dimensions beside it, a rigid backer plate and a magnetic bite valve.

On the maker’s own page

A 3 liter Hydraulics reservoir with a Slide-Seal top.

Osprey states a leakproof Slide-Seal opening with a one-handed top closure that opens wide for filling and cleaning and seals securely on the move; a lightweight rigid internal backer plate that adds structure so the reservoir slides into a pack and stays upright; a slim slosh-free profile from a central baffle; a high-flow bite valve with an on/off switch and magnetic attachment; a BPA-free pack-compatible design working with most hydration-compatible Osprey packs and the HydraClip hanger system; and item dimensions of 17.3 × 7.5 × 0.4 in with an item weight of 0.52 lb.

No bore. No film named. No disconnect. No cleaning method.

The only American weight on this shelf

Nought point five two pounds, with the dimensions beside it.

Sixteen of the seventeen listings here leave you weighing a parcel. One European reservoir states 130 g (4.6 oz); this states 0.52 lb, about 236 g (8.3 oz).

Seventeen point three inches by seven point five by nought point four. That is a figure you can hold against the sleeve in your own pack.

This shelf’s introduction ends on exactly that: whether the hanger and the shape match the pack you own.

A plate and a baffle

Two answers to the same problem.

A full three-liter bladder with no structure folds, sags to the bottom of a sleeve and has to be wrestled back in.

The rigid backer plate keeps it flat and upright. The central baffle holds the water across the width instead of letting it surge end to end.

That is why the profile stays slim when full, and why it loads more easily than three liters suggests.

The hanger is Osprey’s own

Which the dimensions make survivable.

The claim is for most hydration-compatible Osprey packs and the HydraClip system. The HydraPak Contour in this group claims a universal hanger for clips, hooks and loops from several brands.

Here the height and width are published instead, so the question can be answered with a tape measure rather than a promise.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • An empty weight published, 0.52 lb — the only American listing here to give one
  • Full dimensions published too, 17.3 × 7.5 × 0.4 in
  • A one-handed Slide-Seal closure that opens full width for filling and cleaning
  • A rigid internal backer plate, so the reservoir loads easily and stays upright
  • A central baffle against slosh
  • A magnetic bite valve with an on/off switch, and the HydraClip hanger system

Compromises

  • No quick-disconnect, so the hose stays attached for filling and drying
  • No film material named and no thickness
  • No cleaning method, no reversibility, no dishwasher claim
  • No hose bore
  • The HydraClip hanger is stated for Osprey packs, so fit elsewhere is unverified
  • Fifty-two dollars for three liters

Specifications

Capacity3 L — stated, described as extra large, with item dimensions of 17.3 × 7.5 × 0.4 in. The 0.4 in depth is the flat figure, so the dimensions describe the reservoir empty
Opening typeA leakproof Slide-Seal opening with a one-handed top closure — stated to open wide for filling and cleaning and to seal securely on the move. It is the opening type this shelf's introduction prefers, because it can be turned back
Fill port widthNot published as a figure, but the Slide-Seal is a full-width opening stated to open wide for filling and cleaning, and the reservoir is 7.5 in across
Hose internal diameterNot published. A high-flow bite valve and hose are stated with no bore figure
Bite valveA high-flow bite valve with magnetic attachment — stated, so the mouthpiece clips to a sternum strap and returns to the same place. One of two magnetic hose fittings in this group
Shut-offAn on/off switch on the bite valve — stated, and described in the maker’s text as thumb-operated
Quick-disconnect fittingNot published as a detachable connector. The HydraClip hanger system is stated for quick integration with the pack, which is a hanging fitting rather than a hose disconnect
Film materialNot named. BPA-free is stated and no polymer or thickness appears
Seam constructionNot published as a method. A lightweight rigid internal backer plate and a central baffle are stated — the backer plate to add structure so the reservoir slides into a pack and stays upright, the baffle to reduce slosh and keep the profile slim
Stated cleaning methodNot published as a method, although the Slide-Seal opening is stated to open wide for cleaning as well as filling. No brush, no reversibility and no dishwasher claim
Empty weight0.52 lb — stated, about 236 g (8.3 oz). It is the only empty weight published by an American listing on this shelf; on the European side one reservoir states 130 g (4.6 oz)

What people ask before buying

Why does an empty weight matter?

Because it is the only part of a reservoir you carry whether it is full or not, and because it is almost never published. This is the one American listing on this shelf to give a figure — 0.52 lb, about 236 g (8.3 oz) — and it gives the dimensions beside it, 17.3 by 7.5 by 0.4 inches. Those two facts together let you check the reservoir against the sleeve in your pack before ordering, which this shelf's introduction ends on as the dull detail that decides daily use. Sixteen of the seventeen listings here leave you weighing a parcel instead.

What does the backer plate do?

It stops the reservoir behaving like a bag. A full three-liter bladder with no structure folds, sags to the bottom of a pack sleeve and has to be wrestled back in; a lightweight rigid internal plate keeps it flat and upright so it slides in and stays there. The central baffle does the other half, holding the water across the width instead of letting it surge end to end. Together they are the reason this reservoir keeps a slim profile when full, and the reason it is easier to load than its capacity suggests.

Will it fit a pack that is not an Osprey?

The listing does not promise that. It states the reservoir works with most hydration-compatible Osprey packs and with the HydraClip hanger system, which is Osprey’s own fitting — where the HydraPak Contour in this group claims a universal hanger designed for clips, hooks and loops from a variety of brands. What makes this answerable anyway is the dimensions: 17.3 inches tall and 7.5 wide is a figure you can hold against your own sleeve, and almost nothing else on this shelf publishes one. Check the hanger, then check the height.
