HydraPak Force 3L review

The only listing on this shelf to state a dishwasher method, and the only one in this group to name both its film and its seams — heavyweight TPU, welded, fully reversible, with an insulated tube.

On the maker’s own page

A 3 liter Force reservoir, mammoth grey, heavyweight TPU.

HydraPak states ultra-durable abrasion-resistant construction expanding to eight times its size without bursting; a HydraFusion drink tube with a dust cover that insulates in hot weather and protects in tough conditions; a flexible non-kinking drink tube with the high-flow self-sealing Phaser valve, stated leak-proof; and a 100 per cent BPA-free reservoir that is fully reversible and top-rack dishwasher safe. The description adds heavyweight TPU with welded seams, a wide Slide-Seal top, a removable tube and a Plug-N-Play connector — and names a Comet valve where the bullets name a Phaser.

No shut-off. No bore. No thickness. No weight.

The only dishwasher claim on this shelf

Top rack, stated.

Seventeen reservoirs sit on this shelf. This shelf’s introduction calls a dishwasher claim worth finding, because the alternative is a brush set and a drying frame after every trip.

One listing makes it, and this is the one. The reservoir is also stated fully reversible, so there are two routes to a dry inside and neither needs a brush.

The only film and the only seams named

Heavyweight TPU, welded.

Fifteen of the seventeen reservoirs here say premium, durable or leak-proof and stop.

This page names the polymer, names the seam method, and states what the film survives: abrasion, rough pack conditions, and expansion to eight times its size without bursting.

A thickness in millimeters is still absent.

Two valve names, one page

Phaser in the bullets, Comet in the description.

Both are the maker’s own valves, and both are described as high-flow and self-sealing.

Which one is in the box is not resolved anywhere on the page — and neither of them is given the thumb shut-off that the maker’s own Contour reservoir in this group publishes.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • The only top-rack dishwasher claim on this shelf
  • Heavyweight TPU and welded seams, both named — the only listing here to name either
  • Fully reversible, so it turns open and dries without a brush
  • A Plug-N-Play connector, so the tube comes off for rinsing and drying
  • An insulated HydraFusion tube with a dust cover, for heat and for protection
  • Stated to expand to eight times its size without bursting, with a lifetime guarantee

Compromises

  • No shut-off control, where the maker’s own Contour has a thumb switch
  • Two valve names on one page — Phaser in the bullets, Comet in the description
  • No hose bore and no wall thickness in millimeters
  • No empty weight
  • No fill port figure
  • Forty-six dollars, the most expensive listing on this shelf

Specifications

Capacity3 L — stated. The larger of the two HydraPak reservoirs in this group, and the most expensive listing on this shelf
Opening typeA wide Slide-Seal top — stated to make filling easy, with the reservoir fully reversible. It is the opening type this shelf's introduction prefers, because it can be turned back on itself and dried
Fill port widthNot published as a figure. The Slide-Seal is a full-width opening rather than a port
Hose internal diameterNot published. The tube is described as flexible and non-kinking, insulated by a HydraFusion sleeve with a dust cover, and no bore is given
Bite valveThe high-flow self-sealing Phaser valve — named, and stated leak-proof for hands-free drinking. The maker’s description also names a Comet valve, so two valve names appear on one page
Shut-offNot published as a separate control. The valve is stated to be self-sealing and leak-proof; no lever or thumb switch is described, where the maker’s own Contour in this group states a thumb-activated shut-off
Quick-disconnect fittingA Plug-N-Play connector with a removable tube — stated, to simplify rinsing, drying and maintenance after use. That is the fitting this shelf's introduction says lets you lift the reservoir out to refill
Film materialHeavyweight TPU — named. It is the only American listing on this shelf to name its film, and the reservoir is stated to expand to eight times its size without bursting, and to be abrasion resistant. No wall thickness in millimeters is published
Seam constructionWelded seams — stated. It is the only American listing on this shelf to state a seam method
Stated cleaning methodFully reversible and top-rack dishwasher safe — both stated. It is the only listing on this entire shelf, American or European, to state a dishwasher method, which this shelf's introduction calls a claim worth finding
Empty weightNot published

What people ask before buying

Can it really go in the dishwasher?

The listing states top-rack dishwasher safe, and it is the only one of the seventeen reservoirs on this shelf to state any dishwasher method at all. This shelf's introduction calls that a claim worth finding, and the reason is practical: the alternative is a brush set, a hose brush and a drying frame, repeated after every trip. Note the qualifier — top rack, away from the element — and that the reservoir is also stated fully reversible, so between the dishwasher and turning it inside out there is no case for a brush here. Follow the maker’s instructions on water temperature.

What does heavyweight TPU buy over an unnamed film?

Abrasion resistance and elasticity, which are the two failure modes of a reservoir carried in a loaded pack. The listing states the film expands to eight times its size without bursting and is built for rough pack conditions and tactical-style setups — and, more importantly for comparison, it names the material and the seam method, which no other American listing on this shelf does. Fifteen of the seventeen reservoirs here call their film premium or durable and leave it there. What this page still does not give is a thickness in millimeters, which one European listing on this shelf does publish.

Why is there no on/off switch?

That is the odd gap, because the maker’s own Contour reservoir in this group has one — a thumb-activated shut-off on the valve. Here the valve is stated to be self-sealing and leak-proof, which stops drips while you walk, but nothing closes the line if the mouthpiece is pressed by a strap or a car seat. This shelf's introduction names the shut-off as what stops a pack soaking itself in transit. What this listing offers instead is the Plug-N-Play connector: pull the tube off at the reservoir, and the line is empty.

The smaller of the two HydraPak reservoirs in this group; the Force beside it is 3 LA Slide-Seal top — a full-width slide closure, stated as updated, carrying a universal pack hanger designed to work with clips, hooks and loops from a variety of pack brands.
