Glocusent C12,135-LED lantern review

The brightest boost in this group and the longest low setting — 1500 lumens for four minutes, 200 hours at the bottom — on a listing that gives its own weight as an ounce and a half.

On the maker’s own page

An LED rechargeable camping lantern with a 5000 mAh battery.

Glocusent states 135 upgraded LEDs delivering a 360-degree beam over about 201 ft², with five dimmable levels; up to 200 hours on low, up to 12 hours at maximum brightness and a full charge in 3.5 hours, with a 1500 LM “Super Bright” mode illuminating for 4 minutes and a Type-C port able to charge a phone; three color modes at 3000 K, 4500 K and 6001 K; a 1501 LM super bright mode and an SOS red strobe; a weight given as “1.5Oz/299g” with IP45 waterproofing; and a 24-month warranty, six certifications, large sunken buttons, a memory function, a top handle and a bottom hook, with the adapter not included.

No chemistry named. No runtime between low and maximum.

An ounce and a half, for two hundred and ninety-nine grams

Seven times out.

Two hundred and ninety-nine grams is 10.5 ounces, and the shipping weight agrees with the gram figure. An ounce and a half is less than a golf ball.

It matters more than it looks: this is the heaviest single lamp in this group, and the ounce figure would make it the lightest by a factor of thirty.

Two hundred hours, twelve hours, four minutes

Three runtimes, which is the most on this shelf.

Low: 200 hours. Maximum: 12 hours. Boost: 1500 lumens for four minutes.

That is the structure this shelf’s introduction asks for — a runtime beside an output — except at the one level this shelf’s buying tip cares about. Five levels, three figures, and the middle three unmeasured.

And 200 hours is only meaningful if the low setting is bright enough to sit under. The output at low is not published; the stablemate in this group publishes its range as 15 to 250 lumens.

Fifteen hundred, and fifteen hundred and one

Two bullets, two figures.

The second bullet says 1500 LM. The fourth says 1501 LM. One lumen is nothing; two numbers for one mode is a page assembled from two sources.

IP45

The lowest coded rating in this group.

Four keeps out wires and most grit. Five is a water jet, not immersion.

The rest of this group: IP68 to 1.5 meters (5 ft), IP67, IPX5, and two listings with no code at all. A lantern in a tent porch is inside what 45 covers; one left out on a table in a downpour is near its edge.

Glocusent’s instructions carry the charging and the ingress rating. Nothing here replaces them, and nothing on this page describes any product as safe.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • The longest low-setting runtime in this group at up to 200 hours
  • Publishes three runtimes — low, maximum and the 4-minute boost — where most of this group publishes one or none
  • The brightest boost here at 1500 lumens, with its duration stated
  • Both a top handle and a bottom hook, so the lamp hangs, carries or stands
  • Six certifications named — FCC, CE, UL, RoHS, PSE and C-TICK
  • Large sunken buttons for use in the dark, with a memory function
  • A published coverage area, about 201 ft², rather than lumens alone
  • A 24-month warranty stated in the listing

Compromises

  • Its own bullet gives the weight as 1.5 oz for 299 g (10.5 oz) — seven times out
  • IP45 is the lowest coded ingress rating in this group: splashes, not immersion
  • No runtime between 12 hours and 200, which is the whole middle of the range
  • The super-bright mode is published as 1500 lm in one bullet and 1501 lm in another
  • No battery chemistry named, on a sealed pack
  • The adapter is not included, which the sixth bullet states in passing

What people ask before buying

Does it weigh 1.5 ounces or 299 grams?

Two hundred and ninety-nine grams, which is about 10.5 ounces. The fifth bullet reads "lightweight (1.5Oz/299g)" and the two figures are seven times apart; the shipping weight agrees with the gram figure. An ounce and a half is less than a golf ball, which no 135-LED lantern with a 5000 mAh pack could be. It matters because this is the heaviest single lamp in this group, and the ounce figure would make it the lightest by a factor of thirty.

Two hundred hours on low — what does that cost?

Brightness. The listing publishes 200 hours on low, 12 hours at maximum and four minutes in boost, which is the fullest set of runtimes in this group and still leaves out the middle. This shelf's buying tip asks for the runtime at the middle setting because that is the level an evening uses, and a figure of 200 hours is only meaningful if the low setting is bright enough to sit under. The output at that level is not published — the stablemate in this group publishes its range as 15 to 250 lumens, which is the sort of figure this one needs.

How much does IP45 protect?

Splashing water from any direction, and dust larger than a millimeter. The first digit is the solids digit and 4 keeps out wires and most grit; the second is the water digit and 5 is a jet rather than immersion. It is the lowest coded rating in this group — the others are IP68 to 1.5 meters (5 ft), IP67, IPX5, and two listings with no code at all. A lantern hanging inside a tent porch will be fine; one left out in a downpour on a table is nearer the limit of what 45 describes.
