Wakeman 75-CMP1009 foam pad review

An EVA foam pad with a carrying strap and a non-slip face — on a listing whose title calls it half an inch thick and whose bullets, details line and description all call it one.

On the maker’s own page

A foam sleeping pad, lightweight, for camping, cots, tents, backpacking and yoga, non-slip and waterproof with a handle, in black.

Wakeman states a length of 72 inches to fit extra wide cots, with 1-inch-thick premium foam; a weight of 0.6 lbs and 7 inches tall when rolled, with a carrying strap; a non-slip texture and a waterproof surface; use as a floor pad, for car camping, as an RV mattress topper or for yoga; and product details reading EVA foam, 72 by 24 by 1 inches, rolled 24 by 7 by 7, 0.6 lbs, with a carrying strap, in black. The title reads 0.5-Inch Mat.

No R-value. No standard.

Half an inch, against one inch, three times

The title is alone.

Title: “Lightweight 0.5-Inch Mat”. First bullet: “the 1-inch-thick premium foam material”. Details line: “(H) x 1"". Description: “Lightweight 1-Inch Mat”.

Three lines agree with each other and disagree with the title.

This shelf’s introduction makes thickness the second figure and ties it to one question: whether a side sleeper’s hip reaches the ground through a compressed mat. Between half an inch and one inch of EVA, that is the whole answer.

A non-slip face

What nothing else here publishes.

Foam on a nylon tent floor slides, and a mat that has traveled in the night is a mat with a shoulder off the edge — which this shelf’s buying tip says undoes the rating.

It is also what makes the mat usable on a cot, which this listing is partly sold for: a smooth pad on a taut cot bed does not stay anywhere.

Twenty-four by seven by seven

The rolled size, published and honest.

Seven inches of diameter is a cylinder strapped to the outside of a rucksack.

This shelf’s introduction: closed-cell foam never punctures and never packs small. Four mats in this group pack to between 8.6 and 13 inches; the three foam mats pack to 20, 23.6 and 24.

And no R-value

The one decisive figure, absent.

The listing says the waterproof surface “helps keep you warm and provides protection from the cold, wet ground”, which is the claim an R-value would quantify.

Five of the eight mats in this group publish one, between 1.7 and 4.3. This is not among them.

Wakeman’s instructions carry the use. Nothing here replaces them, and nothing on this page describes any product as safe.

What it does well, and where it gives way

Strengths

  • Publishes a product details line with the materials, all three dimensions, the rolled size, the weight and the contents
  • A non-slip texture, stated, so the mat does not travel on a tent floor
  • A carrying strap included
  • Twenty-four inches wide, which is above the middle of this group
  • Publishes its rolled size — 24 by 7 by 7 inches
  • Names the foam: EVA
  • Stated usable on a cot, as an RV topper and for yoga

Compromises

  • Half an inch in the title against one inch in three other places on the same listing
  • No R-value published, on a mat sold partly on protection from cold ground
  • No standard named, because no figure is given to attach one to
  • The maker’s 0.6 lb against a shipping weight of about 617 g (21.8 oz)
  • Seven inches of rolled diameter does not go inside a rucksack
  • No face fabric, so the foam meets the grit directly

What people ask before buying

Half an inch or one inch?

One inch, by weight of evidence. The title says "Lightweight 0.5-Inch Mat"; the first bullet says "the 1-inch-thick premium foam material", the product details line gives "(H) x 1"", and the description repeats "Lightweight 1-Inch Mat". Three lines against one, and the three agree. This shelf's introduction makes thickness the second figure and ties it to a specific question — whether a side sleeper’s hip reaches the ground through a compressed mat — so the difference between half an inch and one inch of EVA is the whole answer to it.

What does non-slip change?

Where the mat is in the morning. A foam pad on a nylon tent floor slides, and a mat that has traveled is a mat with a shoulder off the edge — which this shelf's buying tip says undoes the rating. A textured face is a small thing that nothing else in this group publishes, and it is also what makes the mat usable on a cot, which is the other thing this listing is sold for: a smooth pad on a taut cot bed does not stay put at all.

How does it pack?

Rolled to 24 by 7 by 7 inches, which is published and is the honest answer: seven inches of diameter is a cylinder strapped to the outside of a rucksack, not something that goes inside one. This shelf's introduction says closed-cell foam never punctures and never packs small, and this is the second half of that sentence. Four of the eight mats in this group pack to between 8.6 and 13 inches long; the three foam mats here pack to 20, 23.6 and 24 inches.
